Work From Home Series~Part IV

When working from home I find there are a few important things to keep in mind. I find these things are important because even though you are not walking out into the office surroundings; you still want to represent yourself in a professional manner.

It is therefore important, in my opinion to keep a few things in mind:

  • When you are online people do not always receive how you mean to come across through instant messenger or email. So remember to be careful how you portray yourself.
  • Surround yourself with like-minded and positive people.
  • Those that claim to know it all or do not offer to help you in even a small way are probably not those that you want to frequently be in the same circles with.

To expand a little on the above I realize and have learned that at times when I am frustrated or overwhelmed I came across as angry or ‘short’. Luckily I was able to apologize to that person because they communicated with me in a way that I realized how I must have sounded.

Then there is the helpful person.  You know the one that will.do.anything. to help you succeed. They will show you how to find the right groups to be in. They will point you in the direction of helpful articles, and uplift you when you are frustrated that your site isn’t growing as fast as you had hoped. Now mind you; you don’t want to take advantage of this person; but make sure you take ‘notes’, because they are offering you great information. Once you learn (and believe me you will always be learning), pass on this information to a newer person. If we all work together the online community could be even better.

Then there is the person that ‘may not’ offer hands on help; but they do things that you find helpful. They do not boast, do not brag…they are just ‘there’. They are nice, encouraging and above all humble. I am lucky to know a few of these people and they keep me in awe. They show me with hard work; anything is possible.

BUT THEN…..it can happen.

You find yourself with constant negativity in the groups you participate in.  Possibly it is time to find a new group. It doesn’t mean ALL of those people are negative but as the saying goes “1 rotten apple can spoil the whole bunch”. We all have down, negative days… but I am talking about the negativity that arises from….

You know that 1 person that gets under your skin because they are constantly doing the “look-at-me”, “look how big my numbers are” or chime in on a thread with the “how it is” but do not offer any helpful insights?  Those are also the ones that are not there to coach you along; they are there because you make them feel better about themselves.

You want to steer clear of this type of person. You don’t need constant reminders of where you aren’t yet;  you need uplifting and tips on how to get where they are. You can go to their site and see their numbers or see their posts and see what they are up to- they really don’t have to be constantly chiming in to tell you just how great they are. Steer Clear. This type of person isn’t one that you want to be emulating.

Not wanting to be around this type of person doesn’t make you jealous of their opportunities! Shoot you may even be very happy for them; you just are tired of hearing about them. So YOU make the change, find others with like minds that you want to grow with. They are out there you just have to search them out.

Some Positive Quotes to keep you motivated:

“To succeed… You need to find something to hold on to, something to motivate you, something to inspire you. ” Tony Borsett

“Be not afraid of going slowly. Be only afraid of standing still.” Chinese Proverb

“Never continue in a job you don’t enjoy. If you’re happy in what you’re doing, you’ll like yourself, you’ll have inner peace.”  Johnny Carson

“It’s not who you are that holds you back, it’s who you think you’re not.”   Author Unknown

And last but not least one of my favorite men:

So, I learn from my mistakes. It’s a very painful way to learn, but without pain, the old saying is, there’s no gain. I found that to be true in my life. You miss a lot of opportunities by making mistakes, but that’s part of it: knowing that you’re not shut out forever, and that there’s a goal you still can reach.
Johnny Cash

  1. I love this post! I definitely agree with the “pay it forward/give back” part. When I help someone and they ask me what they can do in return, I reply with, “just pay it forward”.
I also wanted to add to the “don’t take advantage” of someone’s willingness to offer a helping hand. At some point, people do need to grab the bull by the horns and actually do some of their own research. One of my favorite sayings is: “Knowledge is power, be informed.”

  2. I try to “pay it forward” with the knowledge that I’ve gained from you and others, but I’m SO impatient, and I’m horrible at explaining things. I’m sometimes horrible at learning them too. I try to be as helpful as I can, even when I don’t know a whole lot about what is being asked.
I can also be the person talking about my numbers. Not that I’m bragging or anything, just trying to share my happiness with those who have helped me get to where I am in such a short time. :0)

    • Thank you for your comment; actually you aren’t bragging when you mention your numbers-yours is more looked at as “sharing” where you are getting to with the knowledge you have gained :) .

  3. Well – You are DEFINITELY one of those people who are always willing to help out!! You are amazing, and I don’t think I could find a single other blogger out there who doesn’t think that you are totally awesome :)

  4. These are good points for either online or offline networking. People are more willing to gravitate to others that are not just out there to put themselves constantly in the spotlight. Personally, I’m always looking to learn something new and when I do, I love to share what I’ve learned.

  8. Great post. For me, it’s all about finding the right people to network with. I love learning from my peers and I also like to try to be as helpful as I can to the people I associate myself with online. I definitely try to stay away from some of the negativity I’ve seen online. No need to get myself all worked up over nonsense!

    • Diane, you are so correct! the whole effective use of social media is about connecting with correct & like minded people! I think if some one is just devoting time on networking, the product/site can be an instant hit!

  9. I think your very first tip is soooo important. Text does not show tone! It is so easy to misinterpret what people are trying to get across and you have to be super careful how you word things! Thanks for sharing!
